Section fortification Schanze

The Schanze section fortification is located in the Holstein district of the Upper Palatinate town of Berching in the Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate of Bavaria . The facility is located on Högelberg, approx. 400 m south-southeast of Holnstein in the state forest department In der Schanz .

description

The mountain tongue of the Högelberg protruding far to the west towards the valley of the Weißen Laber drops steeply on all sides and is connected to the hinterland by a 600 m wide plateau. 500 m before the mountain tongue, a 700 m long section wall crosses the narrowest point leading to the mountain. It connects to the steep drop on both sides. The wall is 8 m wide and 1 m high in the southern part and runs in a straight line here. In a weak S-curve 100 m before the southern steep slope there is a roughly 4 m wide and fairly shallow ditch up to the edge of the slope. The height from the bottom of the trench to the edge of the rampart is 1.3 m. At the northern edge of the slope, the wall bends a little along the hollow and at the northern steep drop it merges with an S-shaped kink into a flat edge wall and then into an artificial, reinforced slope edge. This is visible up to the tip of the tongue of the mountain. Below the top, a path leads diagonally over the steep slope to the summit plateau. Under the edge it is carved out of the rock over a length of 20 m as a 2 m wide alley. 300 m east of the section wall, the hinterland rises slightly, at the foot of the rise there is a 250-long straight edge of the terrain, which appears to have been flattened in places in the west.

history

Some prehistoric fragments were found that are kept in the Historical Museum of Regensburg .

Deviating from or in addition to this historical classification, the complex is interpreted as a Bavarian defensive works built in the course of the War of the Spanish Succession . As evidence, u. a. pointed to a pentagonal redoute in front of the section wall that became visible in lidar images and also to the designation “on the hill” contained in the Bavarian original cadastre . This later use as a modern fortification does not contradict an earlier (prehistoric) fortification.
