Altenburg Castle Stables

The Burgstall Altenburg is an abandoned medieval hilltop castle on the western edge of the valley of the White Laber , also referred to here as the lower citizens of Laber . The castle site is located on the eastern outskirts of Oberbürg in the municipality of Dietfurt an der Altmühl in the Neumarkt district in Upper Palatinate in Bavaria . The castle was the seat of the Altenburg taverns, later it came to other noble families. Only a partially preserved neck ditch of the small castle has survived. The place is protected as soil monument number D-3-6935-0073 "Medieval castle stable" Altenburg ", hilltop settlement of the Hallstatt period and the late Latène period".

history

The Altenburg castle stable was the seat of the Altenburg taverns between 1136 and 1380. They were ministerials to the Counts of Hirschberg , at whose court they also served as gifts with their office . With the death of the Hirschberg Count Gebhard VII in 1305, the castle became the property of the Eichstätt diocese . The taverns were still on the site until they died out before 1384.

Their successors were the Groß von Meckenhausen , they are proven to be the owners of the castle between 1384 and 1422. The von Tilly family also owned the castle between 1624 and 1724. It is not known exactly how long the castle was habitable. It is said to have fallen into disrepair since the 14th century.

The late medieval to early modern castle of Oberbürg , which has also been abandoned today, was located about 240 meters west of the castle site, roughly in the center of the village of the same name.

description

The castle site is around 480  m above sea level. NHN Höhe on the eastern outskirts of Oberbürg on a wide and east-facing mountain nose, about 90  meters above the valley floor of the White Laber. This mountain nose is secured in the north and in the east by the steep slopes of the Laber, on the south side by the steep slopes of a dry valley , which flows into the Labertal. To the west of the castle is a larger and even Jura plateau between the valleys of the White Laber and the Altmühl .

The castle grounds, which are now largely built over, are largely located on the grounds of house number 1 and on its meadow. Only a few remains of the castle have survived, at the northwest corner of the castle plateau the beginning of the once semicircular neck ditch is still visible, which served as an obstacle to the approach of the castle towards the flat western fore area. Most of this trench has been filled in today. On the mountainside there is still a remnant of a retaining wall made of ashlar.
