history

Early history

The area around Neunkirchen has been inhabited since earlier times and it is likely that hunters were already in the area around Speikern in the Middle Stone Age (around 2000 BC). Urn fields from the Bronze Age , around 1300–1800 BC , were also found below the Glatzenstein . Uncovered in which a cord ceramic jug , bone cup and a stone spoon were found. A grave find from the Hallstatt period , in which vessels and a clay equestrian figure - the so-called Speikerner Reiterlein  - were found in 1962 , bear witness to the settlement in Celtic times.

Nivwinkirchen (Neunkirchen) was first mentioned in a document in 1227. The oldest written mention of Speikern comes from the year 1361. Neunkirchen, an old Eichstätter mission parish, next to Bühl the main parish for the area, is however much older than the document suggests. Already in the first millennium, these two mission churches from Eichstätt, even before the establishment of the diocese of Bamberg , gained a wide area for Christianity. In 1016 the Neunkirchen parish, which covered a huge area, was ceded by the diocese of Eichstätt to the newly founded diocese of Bamberg.

Neunkirchen am Sand, as well as the parts of the municipality Speikern, Rollhofen and Kersbach with Weißenbach, belonged to the Rothenberg rule for centuries. Belonging to this little country helped shape their history. An important step was the purchase of the Rothenberg dominion by the Ganerbe in 1478. This community of interests of 44 respected Franconian knights introduced the Reformation in the whole of Rothenberger Land in 1529. During the Thirty Years' War the Bavarians occupied the Rothenberg area and acquired it after the war. The Counter Reformation found its way into the Rothenberger Land and it was re-Catholicized.
