The Speikern rider is a clay figure that was found south of Speikern in 1962 .

This equestrian figure was made by the Celts . The clay sculpture, which is rare in this type, is an approximately 8 centimeter long grave object . Such sculptures were given to the deceased in the grave to identify him as a member of a wealthy riding caste. The find is now in the Natural History Museum in Nuremberg as a copy.

Reference

The site of the Speikerner Reiterlein is located in a former sand mining area. The site is on the abandoned Ottensooser Weg between the railway line from Nuremberg to Hersbruck , which runs south of Speikern, and the Seeäcker nature reserve. The clay pottery was recovered there as part of an emergency rescue, during which five graves with multiple burials were discovered. In this version, the clay figure is the only specimen that has so far been discovered in Germany. The figurative representation of the horse's body is very similar to that of the cupped horse that was excavated near the Beckersloh burial mounds northwest of Oberkrumbach . The meanwhile renatured find area of the Reiterlein belongs to the municipal area of Ottensoos and forms the approximately 10.5 hectare large nature reserve wet area and sandy grassland near Speikern . An archaeological hiking trail north-east of Speikern focuses on the Speikerner Reiterlein. But it does not lead past the place where it was found.
