history
Until the church is planted
The place was first mentioned as "Paumolsprunne" in 1312 in the Salbuch of Engelthal Monastery. Paumol is derived from Paumold and means tree forest, Prunne indicates a well or spring. Pommelsbrunn is located on the Golden Road from Nuremberg to Prague . In 1349 it fell with Lichtenstein Castle above the village and other Palatinate regions through marriage to the Bohemian King and later Emperor Karl IV. Through an exchange of territory between Charles and his son-in-law, Pommelsbrunn came to Margrave Otto in 1373 with large parts of the Upper Palatinate and became Bavarian. In the First Margrave War (1449–1450) Pommelsbrunn was burned down. In the Landshut War of Succession (1504) the Nuremberg conquered extensive Palatinate territories, the place was burned down again and fell to the imperial city of Nuremberg . The landlords were Nuremberg patrician families. In the Thirty Years War , the Swedish King Gustav Adolf moved with his troops through the municipality. For centuries the village of Pommelsbrunn consisted of only 39 properties. After the Napoleonic Wars , the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire and the smashing of the imperial estates , Pommelsbrunn became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806 . In 1818 the community came into being.

Blazon : "Above a blue pointed shield base with seven points in silver, a gold-armored double-headed eagle split by red and black, topped with a little shield divided by silver and blue, with a growing black bear on top."
Description: The double-headed eagle stands for the two formerly most important rulers in the municipality: the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach / Brandenburg-Bayreuth and the imperial city of Nuremberg . The margraves had the red Brandenburg eagle in their coat of arms, the imperial city of Nuremberg the black imperial eagle. The top sign from the coat of arms of Ebner von Eschenbach, the former most important landlords in Eschenbach, refers to the place Eschenbach. The seven points represent the seven places of the community. The heart shield with the bear reminds of the Lords of Lichtenstein, who died out in the Middle Ages. The colors silver and blue are reminiscent of the Electorate of Bavaria, which was also important for the municipality.
Town twinning
There is a town partnership with Mildenau in the Ore Mountains .
Culture and sights
Pommelsbrunn
The historic bath house is the only preserved bath house in Germany in rural areas. A letter of foundation dated September 24, 1486 is the first documentary mention of the building. In this Eberhart von Mistelbeck transferred the bathhouse of the church. It was in operation until 1867. In 2011, a museum for medieval bathing culture was set up in the former bath area of the historic building.
The natural history museum is located in the community's former schoolhouse. The natural history presented includes cultural landscapes , minerals , caves and fossils .
The evangelical-Lutheran Sankt-Laurentiuskirche, which is visible from afar, characterizes the townscape of Pommelsbrunn. The first documented mention of the church is from 1393. In 1403 the parish church was first run under the name of St. Lorenz. Until 1526 it acted as a branch church of Happurg. The basement of the 43.05 meter high choir tower dates from the 14th century and has Romanesque features. Major renovations were carried out in 1693 and 1726–31 and determine the current appearance of the sacred building. The stucco work in the interior of the baroque church was carried out by Phillip Jakob Schmutzer according to designs by Donato Pollini. Numerous paintings, especially the large ceiling painting, Outpouring of the Holy Spirit, are by Johann Christoph Reich.
The rock Zankelstein - a 537 meter high valley tower ( geotope ) - rises high above the eastern edge of Pommelsbrunn. The Pommelsbrunn house and panoramic mountain is easy to climb, except for the twin towers at the back. At the top there is a beautiful panoramic view of Pommelsbrunn in the Högenbachtal and the Pegnitz valley in the west as well as the surrounding heights.
The Lichtenstein castle ruins , a high medieval aristocratic castle, are located far above the village of Pommelsbrunn.
Pommelsbrunn was the winter residence of the former patrician family Behaim von Schwarzbach auf Kirchensittenbach . The last representative of the family died in the village in 1942 (see also: Martin Behaim , Martin Behaims Erdapfel ).
Eschenbach
The Eschenbach Castle of the former patrician family and landlords Ebner von Eschenbach , also called Ebner Castle , is located in the district of Eschenbach and has been in the family since around 1508. The Castle is a former moated castle . A rectangular, three-story, massive Palas with time the same grand pianos from the year 1554/55 is the basic architectural structure. In 1885 a pointed helmet tower was added. On the south side of the inner courtyard there is a wall with a parapet walk around it .
The Evangelical Lutheran parish church of Sankt Paul zu Eschenbach represents the mother parish of Vorra, Alfalter and Hirschbach. The Pauluskirche was consecrated by Bishop Gundekar II of Eichstätt between 1057 and 1075. The choir tower was built at the beginning of the 14th century . The nave is from the 14th / 15th centuries. Century. Several alterations took place in 1445 and 1669. The nave was rebuilt in 1760. A church cemetery is attached to the church. Part of the cemetery fortification dates from the 15th century and is made of limestone.
The Wengleinpark nature conservation center is located in Eschenbach . In 1922, the entrepreneur and nature lover Carl Wenglein bought historic hutanger areas on a steep slope near Eschenbach and developed one of the first German nature conservation areas for educational and recreational purposes in the 1930s. One focus of the work today is on a hutanger project that has the maintenance of the Eschenbacher Kühanger as its subject.
Hartmannshof
The former station building in Hartmannshof was purchased in 1992 by Kurt Tausendpfund, the owner of the Sebald cement works there. In 2011, the Hartmannshof prehistoric station was opened in the building, in which objects from the Hunas cave ruins are shown.

Arzlohe
There is a ruined chapel south of the Arzlohe settlement. The chapel was built in the 14th century and was consecrated to the two patron saints against the plague and epidemic, Rochus and Leonhard. Later, the name Zum heiligen Baum became popular. The single-nave, late Gothic sacral building made of limestone rubble was in ruins at the end of the 15th century. The chapel is in an open field and is surrounded by a group of trees. The place on which the ruin stands could, due to the popular name (Zum heiligen Baum), represent an earlier, pre-Christian place of worship, which later developed into a place of pilgrimage. At the Jakobi-Kirchweih there is still an evangelical procession from Pommelsbrunn to the chapel ruins.
Heldmannsberg
The Kurbaierische government initiated the construction of the Catholic parish church Maria Himmelfahrt in the course of the Counter-Reformation for the enclave of the Upper Palatinate in the Nuremberg area . The Catholics lived in this area for many centuries, scattered in the evangelical environment. The church with a hall and bau-choir that has not been moved in was built in the years 1672–1674 according to the plans of Wolfgang Hurstetter in a pure baroque style. In the late 17th century, the adjoining church cemetery was enclosed with a stone wall with a richly structured portal . Pilgrimages to the Catholic parish church were the starting point for disputes between the imperial city of Nuremberg and the Kurbaiern .
Hunas
Stone Age finds were proven in the cave ruins on Steinberg . The Erlangen paleontologist Florian Heller discovered the filled cave near Hunas in 1956 . The cave ruins illustrate the history of the Ice Age man.
