The hamlet of Hunas is located in the district of Nürnberger Land in the state of Bavaria and is one of 22 districts of the municipality of Pommelsbrunn . The small town is located north of Hartmannshof on a plateau of the Hersbrucker Alb . The hamlet can be reached from Hartmannshof via a road that leads past the Sebald Zement company. The discovery of the cave ruins of Hunas gave the place supraregional importance.

Place name

The name Hunas is probably derived from a settlement of a Honung, Huning, Hunan or later in shortened form a Hono, Honi or Huno. Around 1300 it was called Honus or Honunges, 1391 Honings, 1529 Huneas, 1733 Hunnas, 1840 Hunas. Honung is an old German family name.

history

Already in 1300 Hunas was in Urbar the provost Hersbruck mentioned the monastery mountains. The place was owned by the Bergen monastery near Neuburg an der Donau . In the land register of the former Hersbruck Propsteigüter zu Hunas, fields and forests “Vnnterm Haunstein” were registered in 1539. At the beginning of the 16th century, the entire area came to the imperial city of Nuremberg , and in 1806 to the Kingdom of Bavaria . The hamlet of Hunas was assigned to the Hartmannshof community. This was incorporated into the municipality of Pommelsbrunn on January 1, 1977.

Steinberg cave ruins

The Steinberg cave ruins were discovered in May 1956 by the Erlangen university professor Florian Heller. The Heller excavations were completed in 1964, resumed in 1983 and ended in 2016. In addition to numerous artifacts, the wisdom tooth of a Neanderthal man was also found there.
