Gersdorf belonged to the imperial city of Nuremberg in the 15th century. There are several interpretations for the name of the place, it could be derived from the highest peak of the Nonnenberg, the Geierstein, but also from the earlier cultivation of barley . Reuth (small town with around 20 inhabitants on the northern slope of the 539 meter high Reuther Mountain; first documented mention in the 13th century), Pötzling and Gersberg belonged to the former community of Gersdorf .
