Around the village and along the Pegnitz there are steep rock faces that climbers like to visit, such as the Hartenstein climbing wall at the Hartenstein cemetery and the Rote Fels at the entrance to the Anka valley on the Pegnitz near Rupprechtstegen. Rock walls, picturesque mountain ranges and the two dolomite rocks Baboon and Student near Enzendorf are located on romantic hiking trails. The Anka Valley and St. Andrew's Church at Rupprechtstegen are opposite the restaurant and Café Kraft. At the solitude of Höflas opposite Häuslfeld, a hiking trail leads over the hill, from where you can see Hartenstein Castle from its most beautiful side.

To the right of the Pegnitz, many hiking trails lead into the surrounding area. Mills developed along the Pegnitz very early, using the river's water power. One of the oldest is the mill at Rupprechtstegen, it goes back to a controversial dispute in 1260. During this time, the name of Rupprechtstegen was first mentioned in a document. It developed from the name of the first Reich ministerial on the Hertenstein Rupert der Herte and the footbridges across the river. The Neuensorg mill is one of the dolomite works , its origin was in the 13th century. Enzendorf is not as old as the other districts. The mill around which the place probably developed was probably the origin of the small village. Other mills are the Stiebermühle, the Grießmühle and the Harnbachmühle on streams that flow to the Pegnitz.

In 1946 a way of the cross to the chapel on the Frauenberg was set up at the instigation of the local pastor Nieser. The architect Seitz made the designs, the sculptor Max Renner created the sculptures. The Way of the Cross was dedicated on Sunday, October 12, 1947. A Passionsweg from Hartenstein to Neuhaus is still in use. The procession takes place every year in May; it is prayed for blessings for the crops and jobs. One year the Hartensteiners make a pilgrimage to Neuhaus and the next the Neuhausers to Hartenstein.

The Burg Hartenstein , 2007
Hartenstein Castle

The Burg Hartenstein came about before 1250; it served mainly as the seat of the Pfälzer Wittelsbacher for the area of the surrounding villages in the Veldensteiner forest, which they owned from 1329. In 1325 the castle was defended against an onslaught of Nuremberg troops.

It was privately owned until 2001. In 1803, after secularization in Bavaria , the Hartenstein nursing office came to the Sulzbach district court . The Hartenstein nursing office was dissolved and three municipal districts were formed with the royal Bavarian municipal administrations Grünreuth, Hartenstein and Enzendorf. The community of Grünreuth included the village communities Loch, Groß- and Kleinmeinfeld, the community of Hartenstein the village communities Güntersthal, Engenthal and Gaißberg and the deserted areas Höflas, Häuslfeld and Neuensorg and the community of Enzendorf the village communities Lungsdorf and Rupprechtstegen as well as the Harnbach, the Stieber and the Semolina grinder.

19th to 21st century

In 1831 the parish village of Hartenstein had 252 residents and 47 houses.
With the construction of the railway line from Nuremberg to Neuhaus from 1871 to 1875, the area of the upper Pegnitz valley was connected to the transport network.

Between 1862 and 1864, the Nuremberg publisher and editor of the Nuremberg Press , Ludwig Jegel, built a luxuriously equipped spa hotel in Rupprechtstegen on a cliff 40 meters above the Anka valley . Because of the poor accessibility, the guests stayed away and Jegel had to file for bankruptcy. Only after the construction of the railway did the hotel improve after several changes of ownership. The hotel quickly achieved world fame for a short time. High-ranking personalities such as Princess Gisela of Bavaria and Richard Wagner during his time in Bayreuth were guests of the hotel. Rupprechtstegen became a climatic health resort. In 1938 the spa hotel became a rest home for officers and civil servants of the Air Force , and during the war it served as an auxiliary hospital. In 1953 it became the property of the Nuremberg Regional Tax Office and was mainly used as a rest home for the customs officials. In 1966 it was officially called the Rupprechtstegen customs school . Until the closure in March 2001, customs officers were trained in the customs school for border control , border clearance and internal customs services . After more than five years of vacancy, a use as an alpine and communicative education center with a high-rope climbing garden and Burma suspension bridge is currently under discussion (December 2006) . In 1958 the house of the farmer's wife in Hartenstein was built, a functional building in which the community chancellery is located with a meeting room, plus a freezer, a slaughterhouse, a smokehouse, a laundry, a bakery, the garage for the volunteer fire brigade with the equipment room and a Caretaker's apartment. During the last regional reform in 1972, the three municipal administrations were merged and formed the current municipality with 15 parts of the municipality. in 2002 the community bought the castle. In 2004 the municipality of Hartenstein founded Burg Hartenstein AG. She should preserve the castle and make it accessible to the public. Today a knight's museum and a restaurant are set up in the castle.
