Snake spruce from Großmeinfeld

The snake spruce from Großmeinfeld is a conifer with long drooping branches that is located near Großmeinfeld ( Hartenstein municipality ) in Middle Franconia . In total there are three snake spruce trees in a very small space.

Scholars argue about the origin of the snake spruce ( Picea abies Virgata ). Some believe that it is a mutation , others suspect a very old tree species. It is a conifer with sparsely needled, long drooping branches. It is also believed to be a holdover from the Ice Age . The age of the tree is not known.

The tree was badly damaged by a storm. At a distance of 50 meters to the east there is another stately and intact snake spruce. Another, newly growing and already about one meter high (as of August 2012) was fenced in for protection.

The former natural monument can be found on the hiking trail marked Grünpunkt between Hirschbach and Hartenstein.
