description

View into the Anka valley

The cave is located in the Anka valley about 800 meters north of Rupprechtstegen . It is about 50 meters long in total. The size of the entrance depends on the dimensions of the cathedral-like grotto and is around 20 × 11 meters with a height of 7 meters. The cave has three entrances. From the pre-grotto, some narrow passages lead into the rugged rock. The cave is very popular and there are only a few sinter groups , moon milk and blanket puffs to be found. There are no stalactites worth mentioning in the cave.

The cave is registered as D 13 in the Franconian Alb cave register (HFA).

history

The cave was probably used as early as the Bronze Age and by the Celts . In times of crisis and war in the Middle Ages, it was a retreat for the surrounding population. According to tradition, there was an altar in a carved rock niche .

Scientific excavations were carried out by Richard Ertl and Ferdinand Birkner. Nothing is known about their excavation finds.
