About this picture

Reichenschwand is a municipality in the central Franconian district of Nürnberger Land .

geography

location

The community of Reichenschwand with its two districts Oberndorf and Leuzenberg is located in the already wide valley of the Pegnitz . The medieval town center stretches about 400 meters in a north-south direction right up to the river. There is the Evangelical Lutheran Albanus Church and the so-called Second Furtenbach Castle. In the south, on the opposite bank of the Pegnitz, the area of the former moated castle of the Lords of Strahlfels connects to the Reichenschwander Altort.

Later, the place was expanded significantly to the north and especially to the west, so that today the district of Oberndorf adjoins Reichenschwand immediately north.

The Leuzenberg district, on the other hand, is located about 1,800 meters to the north in a wide basin formed by the Weppach . Leuzenberg is located at about 400  m above sea level. NN and is bordered in the east by the Großer Hansgörgel, in the west by the Vorderen Röd and the Kreuzbühl. To the north the basin is closed by a steep slope to the adjoining plateau.

The border of the municipality stretches in the east, where it meets the municipality of Hersbruck, just a few meters outside of Reichenschwand from the Pegnitz valley to the north and runs west of the summit point of 601  m above sea level. NN high Great Hansgörgels to the northwest. The municipality of Kirchensittenbach connects there. About three kilometers north of the center of Reichenschwand, the municipality reaches its northernmost extent up to a plateau of the Franconian Alb . Then the border to Neunkirchen am Sand runs in a south-westerly direction downhill again into the Pegnitz Valley and includes a large part of the Rödelberg with the Kreuzbühl. After the westernmost point of the municipality boundary, about 1550 meters from the town center, it crosses the B 14 and the Pegnitz and extends through the Pegnitz floodplains far to the south, where it touches the area of the Ottensoos municipality. At about 1650 meters from the town center, it reaches the southernmost point of the Reichenschwander municipality and then moves in a north-easterly direction, now bordering the Henfenfeld area, back to the Pegnitz, where it also reaches its greatest eastern extension at 800 meters from the town center.

The Franconian Marienweg runs through Reichenschwand .

history

Reichenschwand was first mentioned in a document (albeit suspected of being forgery) in 1225. From 1310 there is a document that is recognized as genuine. Reichenschwand was largely destroyed in the Thirty Years War. After the French Revolution in the 18th century, the city of Reichenschwand went bankrupt because the French King Louis XIV was unable to repay money borrowed from the city. At the end of the Second World War in April 1945, American officers directed the fighting for Nuremberg from there.

Culture and sights

  • Advent windows are held in Reichenschwand every year in December. An Advent window begins at 6:30 p.m. First, songs are sung and a Christmas story is told. Then the previously decorated window is opened and afterwards there are drinks (for example mulled wine) and pastries for free with the meal. On December 23rd it will take place at the roundabout in town.
  • The rectory and Albanus Church , with the sandstone wall and the baroque portal, form a remarkable ensemble. Bonaventure I von Furtenbach had the building erected in 1557. The rectory was renovated from 2001 to 2004 and in 2005 received the Middle Franconian District Monument Prize.
  • Reichenschwand moated castle with a large avenue , first mentioned in a document around 1366/68. The castle was built and inhabited in the 14th century by the von Strahlfels family of ministers . Bonaventura Furtenbach acquired the manor in 1531 and had a renaissance castle built “from the ground up, precious and beautiful” in place of the old moated castle . It burned out completely in 1553 during the Second Margrave War . Rebuilt, it suffered the same fate from Bavarian troops in the War of Spanish Succession in 1703 . At the end of the Second World War in 1945, the palace became the seat of the American command staff, which led the fighting over Nuremberg . Today the castle is owned by the Wöhrl family .
  • The Löffler Collection is a private collection of historical seating furniture from two centuries in Reichenschwand. With over 900 exhibits, it is one of the largest in Europe.
  • In May 2015 the generation garden (Von-Furtenbach-Straße) in Reichenschwand was officially opened. The main idea behind the project is to open up new opportunities for the residents of the region in line with demographic change. The generation garden should serve as a meeting place for young and old and promote intergenerational coexistence. The space can be expanded at any time. The pure construction costs amounted to around 345,000 euros, with the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forests in Uffenheim funding this project with 150,000 euros from LEADER funds.

Traffic situation

Today's Reichenschwand stop

Reichenschwand received a train station on the Nuremberg – Cheb line in 1877 . This was built east of the village and received a reception building , a goods shed and other buildings. In 1983 the station was closed and a stop was built about 400 m to the west, which still exists today. It is served hourly by regional trains on the Nuremberg - Neuhaus an der Pegnitz line. The old station building is used by an association.

The busy federal highway 14 runs right through the town . A bypass road has been discussed for years, a solution currently being considered is a tunnel that will pass under the community.

Building sites

The development of the new Fürschwald I building area with roads as well as water, electricity and gas connections was completed on November 2, 2010. There are 118 building sites in this area in a purely residential area. On the other hand, six properties are located near the railway in a mixed area. A building area between the Fürschwald and the Saueracker is currently being developed. There is already a waiting list for these properties, but most of them have already been sold. For spring 2019, another building area is planned to be developed in the west of Reichenschwand.

church

history

The church is first mentioned in a document in 1418. The castle chapel was named “St. Willibald "called, Saint Afra is also mentioned as a patron saint. In 1520 the chapel was completely renovated by the then lord of the castle, Georg von Ratz. With the introduction of the Reformation in the Nuremberg area (1525), the Reichenschwander community became Evangelical-Lutheran . When Bonaventura Furtenbach acquired Reichenschwand around 1531, he had the church rebuilt and the steeple erected, which has remained almost unchanged to this day. The rectory was renovated from 2001 to 2004 and in 2005 received the Middle Franconian District Monument Prize.

The patron saint of the Reichenschwander Church is now also St. Alban, after whom the church is named to this day. Bonaventura Furtenbach had a parsonage built for the pastors and their families in 1557. In 1714 Wilhelm August von Furtenbach had the wall of the former cemetery built around the church with the baroque gate and door, which is still standing today. In 1754 the church was completely rebuilt again. When the church was redesigned at the time, it also got the altar, the baptismal font with cover and the pulpit, which can still be seen in it today. The symbol of the Trinity hangs in a halo above the four-columned altar. The church windows were renovated in 2018.

building

The church, which has remained largely unchanged since 1754, has a rectangular nave with a stucco vault, which is also closed over the three-sided closed, essentially Gothic choir. Since the restoration in 1974, the Rococo stucco has come into its own in the vault. The furnishings of the church are complemented by two brass chandeliers from the 18th century. Death shields for members of the von Furtenbach family (from the years 1564–1775) hang on the walls. The coats of arms of the landlords WGH von Axthelm and FH von Stransky are on the lordship gallery. The former royal box now serves as a “princely children's box”, into which parents and their young children can retreat during services.

On the south wall of the nave, Bonaventura Furtenbach's grave slab is walled in, and in the north wall is a late Renaissance tombstone with the inscription: “Corpus humo, animam superis” (The body to earth, the soul to heaven). A wooden cross donated by the Reichenschwander artist Hubertus Pauli has stood in the choir space next to the altar since 2004. It was designed using old beams from the renovated 16th century rectory. The entrance portal leads into the churchyard and is crowned with a large swan - the heraldic animal of the Furtenbach family. A connecting path leads from the churchyard along the parish garden to the Protestant parish hall.

Go special

The Go Special is a special service by the Protestant community of Reichenschwand. It has a specific topic that is aimed primarily at young people and people who don't normally go to church. The service lasts 90 minutes. It always features: songs from a band, an interviewee, a short film, a play and prayers written by the parish. The GoSpecial is prepared and carried out by around 25 employees from the parish and regional church community.
