Vincent Humbert (born February 3, 1981 , † September 26, 2003 in Berck , Département Pas-de-Calais ) was an accident victim whose case in France reignited a debate on euthanasia .

A serious car accident on September 24, 2000 led to the then 19-year-old Vincent Humbert paralysis of all limbs ( tetraplegia ). After he woke up from a nine-month coma, he was also blind and dumb. Since he could still hear and move his right thumb, he was able to communicate with the outside world. This very stressful situation for him prompted him to ask for euthanasia. Active euthanasia is banned in France, so Vincent Humbert asked French President Jacques Chirac for permission. His mother tried to kill him by injecting him with sodium pentobarbital. He then fell into a coma and his mother was arrested. The next day, Vincent Humbert's book Je vous demande le droit de mourir (“I ask for the right to die”) was published and his mother was released. Another day later, the life support devices were switched off.
