Pierre Mamboundou (born November 6, 1946 in Mouila , † October 15, 2011 in Mindoube , Gabon ) was a politician in the central African state of Gabon. He was a two-time candidate in Gabon's presidential election.

Political career

Mamboundou came from Mouila in the province of Ngounié in the south of the country. He studied in Perpignan and Toulouse , where he graduated with an engineering degree in telecommunications. In 1978 he returned to Gabon and worked for the state telephone company. In 1989 he founded the opposition party Union du Peuple Gabonais (UPG), which initially operated illegally. For a while he had to live in exile in France . In 1990 Mamboundou moved the UPG headquarters from Paris to Dakar . The party was officially approved in 1991, when further parties were allowed in addition to the previous unity party Parti Démocratique Gabonais (PDG) of President Omar Bongo , who had ruled since 1967 . He was President of the UPG and on November 1, 1993 he returned to Gabon himself.

He ran twice for president. On December 12, 1998, he received 16.5% of the vote and took second place. It achieved a similar result on November 27, 2005 when it was back in second place with 13.61%. In view of the president's strong media presence, his prospects, like those of the opposition in general, were assessed as slim even before the election.

He died of a heart attack in 2011.
