The Högenbach is a little more than 20 kilometers long, coarse material rich, carbonate low mountain range in the karstified Franconian Jura , which flows into the Pegnitz at its western bend opposite the parish village Hohenstadt of the municipality of Pommelsbrunn in the district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria after a first north-western and finally almost western run . In the upper reaches it only carries water periodically, the continuously flowing section from a little after the municipality boundary from Birgland to Weigendorf to the mouth is a little over 13 km long.

geography

River course

The origin of the Högenbach lies about half a kilometer south-southeast of the village of Eckertsfeld in the municipality of Birgland in the Bavarian district of Amberg-Sulzbach . On the upper third of the corridor it moves in wide arcs approximately north-northwest and only carries water periodically. On this upper third of the walk, it briefly changes to Illschwanger municipality area in a north-east loop and there passes the village of Einsricht, back on Birglander then the wasteland of Ammersricht and the hamlet of Sunzendorf, then it runs through a closed forest area to the municipality boundary to Weigendorf east of the wasteland Kuschendorf.

After crossing over to Weigendorfer area, about 1.5 km east- south- east of the parish village of Högen, the continuously water-bearing section begins , on which it first strives west-north-west to west. In Högen itself, it then becomes a powerful brook through four other springs, which could even drive two mills there in Unterhögen. In the meanwhile deepened valley it runs through the village of Haunritz and follows it on a short north-westerly stretch past the wasteland Heilbronntal to Weigendorf itself, the border river to the district of Nürnberger Land and thus also between the Upper Palatinate and Middle Franconia.

Högenbach flows into the Pegnitz

Then shortly after crossing over to the area of the Central Franconian municipality of Pommelsbrunn near the parish village of Hartmannshof, which has grown together with Weigendorf, it takes up the Etzelbach from the right , with a noticeably larger catchment area than the Hörgenbach up to this point, its largest inflow. From now on, the B 14 follows the Högenbach. The municipality's main town, Pommelsbrunn, which now moves almost westwards, is located to the right of the small river in a valley spider, at the inlet of the Ge (h) resbach from the north and the Arzloher Talbach from the south. At the lower edge of the settlement of Pommelsbrunn, the valley flows into the wide floodplain of the Pegnitz , which curves to the west here , into which, last of all, the Högenbach flows from the left opposite the parish village of Hohenstadt of the community.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Högenbach covers 112.9 km² in the Franconian Alb . It has roughly the contour of an isosceles triangle with a base extending from south to north between approximately the Sulzbach-Rosenberg junction on the A 6 at Birgland-Schwenderöd on the southeast corner and the hamlet of Fichtenhof of Markt Königstein on the northeast corner . The third corner to the west is the estuary. The unstable upper course of the Högenbach arises in the southeast corner. Up to the confluence of the only large tributary Etzelbach from the northeast, which contributes a larger sub-catchment area of 61.2 km², the Högenbach itself has a sub-catchment area of only 32.3 km². The reason for this is also that the Etzelbach am Oberlauf, which is quite shorter than the Högenbach-Oberlauf, takes up the catchment area-rich Reinbach, together with it experiences some dry valley inflows and, in addition, shortly before the confluence from the east in Weigendorf, the Weigenbach, which runs close to the middle Hörgenbach, flows into it.

The eastern catchment area border is part of the European main watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea, because on the other side, the Vils collects the runoff from its immediate competitors on the other side of the sheath and feeds it over the Naab to the Danube . On the other hand, two other tributaries of the Pegnitz flow along the two legs of the catchment triangle, in the northwest the Hirschbach , which a little before the Högenbach into the middle, in the southeast the Happurger Bach with its upper reaches, which flows into the lower Pegnitz shortly after the Högenbach.

The flow in the Högenbach is characterized by karstification in its catchment area. While the upper reaches are completely dry at times, the water inflow from the headwaters can be considerable when the snow melts . There are few above-ground watercourses here, most of the valley basins are dry valleys, at least in the upper area.
