history

Former goods shed
Hersbruck train station (left Pegnitz) in January 1977

The first plans for the specific route of the Bavarian Eastern Railway from Nuremberg to Schwandorf included a train station in Hersbruck. Due to the route in the direction of flow to the left of the Pegnitz, the first Hersbruck train station was built about half a kilometer south of what was then the old town on the green meadow. Soon after the opening on May 9, 1859, the first companies settled at the station and ensured the volume of goods from the start. Over time, a separate district developed, which was separated from the old town by the Pegnitz, which repeatedly flooded. With the construction of a stone bridge in 1868, what was known as the Ostbahn and later the Alte Bahn was firmly connected to the rest of the city. The station was very busy, the initially three pairs of trains a day were soon expanded to include a few excursion trains.

The Hersbruck entrance building, a two-storey central pavilion with lower wing structures, was built from sandstone and still exists today as a monument. There was also a station restaurant, a goods shed and a wagon shed. Railway operations were carried out on three platform tracks and several freight and shunting tracks. Some companies had their own sidings , including the BayWa -Lagerhaus.

With the opening of the right Pegnitz line from Nuremberg to Cheb in 1877 , the left station lost part of its importance. In the same year, both stations were given the name suffixes left and right of the Pegnitz . This also happened in Lauf an der Pegnitz . After one of the two line tracks between Nuremberg-Mögeldorf and Hersbruck was dismantled in 1943 and due to the Second World War , the station on the left of the Pegnitz continued to lose importance, as a large part of the train traffic between Nuremberg and Hersbruck drove "right", i.e. the right Pegnitz line and the connecting line Hersbruck-Pommelsbrunn took advantage of the constant "left" on the Nuremberg – Schwandorf railway line.

With the expansion of the Nuremberg S-Bahn to Hartmannshof in 2010, the Hersbruck train station on the left of the Pegnitz became more attractive, especially for commuters from the southern part of Hersbruck. The line and the station were expanded to double-track, modernized and electrified .

history

Before the opening, the location of the train station was disputed, either to the east near the old town of Hersbruck on Amberger Strasse or to the west in today's Altensittenbach district. Because of the competition from the Henfenfeld station on the Nuremberg – Amberg line of the Bayerische Ostbahnen AG , the location was determined on the former city limits of Altensittenbach.

Former engine shed (2017)

The station building was built in the style customary along the route, it still exists today with an attached restaurant. Just three months after the Nuremberg – Bayreuth railway line opened, a connecting track to the Nuremberg – Schwandorf Eastern Railway was opened between Hersbruck on the right of the Pegnitz and Pommelsbrunn . It begins at the Hersbruck train station on the right of the Pegnitz on platform 1 and runs parallel to the existing line for a few kilometers.

In 1878 the branch from Schnabelwaid via Marktredwitz to Oberkotzau and in 1883 the line from Marktredwitz to Cheb was opened. Between 1898 and 1901, the Nuremberg – Marktredwitz section of the Nuremberg – Cheb railway line and the Hersbruck station on the right of the Pegnitz were expanded to double-track due to increased traffic.

Historical

After operations began in 1877, several trains ran daily for passenger and freight traffic. Due to the connecting function of the line to Cheb in the direction of Bohemia / Silesia , it was soon used by international long-distance traffic. The operation was handled by steam locomotives , with powerful express train and simple local traffic locomotives were used.

After the Second World War , the first diesel locomotives came to Hersbruck, they pulled F and D trains, some of which stopped in Hersbruck. At the same time, long-distance traffic fell significantly due to the development in the Eastern Bloc countries . From 1975 steam locomotives were no longer used.

today

Since 1992 the multiple units of the Regional Express (formerly: Regional Schnellbahn ) have stopped in Hersbruck on the right of the Pegnitz . These trains were introduced to shorten travel times and use tilting technology . Due to the high level of acceptance, the offer was increased, today four regional express trains stop every hour. The timetable is reinforced by regional trains that stop at all stops between Neuhaus and Nuremberg.

The regional trains stopping in Hersbruck (Pegnitz on the right) are operated with the series 612 , 622 and 648 of Deutsche Bahn AG .

The parking area of the station is used for class 648 railcars. Another track is used to rear the unused locomotives from N1 Rail , which was taken over on June 1, 2016 by the International Society for Railway Transport (IGE) .
