The Schnabelwaid station is a separation station at the Nuremberg-Cheb railway and the southern terminus of the single-track main line Schnabelwaid Bayreuth . Both routes are not electrified .

location

The station is on a hillside on the eastern edge of the Schnabelwaid market . It is located in the district of Bayreuth in the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Franconia .

history

The Fichtelgebirgsbahn from Nuremberg to Bayreuth and with it the Schnabelwaid station were opened on July 15, 1877 without any major ceremony. At 472 m above sea level, the through station was the highest point on the route. The branch from Schnabelwaid via Kirchenlaibach to Marktredwitz was inaugurated on August 15, 1878, making the Schnabelwaid station a separation station. Through the connection with the Weiden – Oberkotzau railway in Marktredwitz and the extension to Schirnding , this double-track main line, which is followed by the kilometers, became the more important. Today the line to Bayreuth is a branch of the Nuremberg – Cheb line .

The mine in nearby Langenreuth loaded the mined ore at the Schnabelwaid station during its operation from 1908 to 1942 . For this purpose, a material ropeway was built in 1917 from the pit about two kilometers away to the station. Around 1920, a field railway with 600 mm gauge was laid out, which ran from the cable car unloading station with a bridge over the railway to the loading ramp on the east side. In 1937 a new, 3,165 meter long cable car was built, which led over the track directly to the loading ramp. It was not until 2010 that the concrete bunker of this loading facility opposite the train station was demolished.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the German railways, a parade of steam locomotives in front of passenger trains took place in Schnabelwaid . On September 1, 1985, machines of the 01 , 01.10 , 23 and 50 series met there . For this purpose, which showed pre-series - diesel locomotive V 200 002, and - from the East - the fast railcars SVT 182 252 of the German National Railroad .

description

Coming from Pegnitz , the double-track railway follows the valley of the Weihergraben and climbs up the slope of the Kapf mountain to the Schnabelwaid train station. The northern head of the station is spanned by a road bridge, behind which the lines to Bayreuth (single-track) and Marktredwitz (double-track) diverge again slopingly.

Due to its importance, the station was given five main tracks on four platforms , a loading track and - as trains began and ended there - some back tracks. In 1930 there were extensive track systems, with at least three double crossings and two signal boxes .

The tracks have now been dismantled except for three through tracks. The former house platform can no longer be used by Bayreuth trains, the line joins the direction track from Kirchenlaibach at the northern head of the station .

traffic

The timetable of October 15, 1877 shows three continuous pairs of trains between Bayreuth and Nuremberg, all of which stop in Schnabelwaid.

In the 1985 summer timetable, the route book 840, coming from Nuremberg, branches off in Schnabelwaid to Bayreuth and Schirnding. In addition to local trains, several express and express trains stop in Schnabelwaid , most of which operate on the Bayreuth route. Passenger traffic in the direction of Marktredwitz plays a subordinate role.

Most trains currently pass through the station. Regional express trains between Nuremberg and Bayreuth, which run every two hours, stop there, trains on the Marktredwitz – Nuremberg route only very sporadically (as of April 2019).
