The Kirchenlaibach station is a junction station of two main tracks in the municipality Speichersdorf in Upper Franconia .

location

The station area extends in an east-west direction on flat terrain on the southern edge of the districts of Speichersdorf and Kirchenlaibach. The railway lines crossing there run from northwest to southeast and from south to northeast. The nearest town is Kemnath, nine kilometers away .

History and description

Reception building
The striking water tower of the former depot

The station was put into operation on December 1, 1863 with the opening of the Weiden – Bayreuth railway line by the private stock corporation of the Bavarian Eastern Railways . On January 1, 1876, the railway company was nationalized, from then on the line and station belonged to the Royal Bavarian State Railways (K.Bay.Sts.B.). In the years 1877/78 the station was extensively redesigned. Coming from Schnabelwaid , the Fichtelgebirgsbahn reached the station on August 15, 1878 and continued from there to Oberkotzau on the Bamberg – Hof railway line . The newly created junction station received an extensive track system with seven through tracks on platforms , four further main and four secondary tracks. A few loading tracks were built on the north side of the station. The current main building was built between 1898 and 1902.

Until 1972, Kirchenlaibach belonged to the Regensburg Railway Directorate and after its dissolution it became part of the BD Nürnberg. The depot , which became a branch of the Bayreuth depot in 1974 , had a circular locomotive shed. It housed exclusively steam locomotives , the 21 locomotive stands were reached via a turntable . The supply and back tracks of the depot were in the southern part of the station. After the end of steam operation in 1975, it was closed and subsequently demolished.

In contrast to the Fichtelgebirgsbahn, the Ostbahn always remained single-track, although it was intended for a double-track expansion from the outset. The lines separate directly at the station heads, with the tracks in the direction of Nuremberg describing a narrow curve of more than 90 degrees.

The station extends in a west-east direction, the reception building is north of the facilities. In addition to the house platform on platform 1, which is no longer used, there are two covered island platforms (platform 2/3 and platform 4/5), which can be reached through an underpass. There is also an island platform on track 7, which is no longer used and can no longer be reached through the underpass.

The freight transport facilities and the depot in the south of the station were largely dismantled.

Agilis company

In 2014 the listed reception building was orphaned. With the exception of the water tower and a few outbuildings, the depot has been demolished. The track systems were reduced to a minimum.

Long-distance traffic no longer takes place. Nevertheless, the station is an important transfer point. On the route Nuremberg - Marktredwitz - Hof / Cheb , diesel multiple units with tilting technology of the DB Regio Nordostbayern series 612 run hourly as a regional express , alternating between Hof and Cheb. On the routes Bayreuth-Marktredwitz and willow-Bayreuth-Weidenberg operate mass transit rail cars the company Agilis every hour.

The municipal administration and the mayor criticize the condition of the station. Since the railway was privatized, maintenance has left a lot to be desired, and the station building, which has been closed for a number of years, is losing its substance. Access to the tracks is not barrier-free, the toilet has been closed for several years. When it rains heavily, there is water in the underpass, where tiles fall from the wall and entire sections of the wall break off from the ceiling. According to information from the railway, there are currently no concrete renovation or expansion plans.

outlook

In June 2017, Deutsche Bahn announced that the station should be converted to be handicapped accessible. The existing pedestrian underpasses are to be filled, and access to the central platforms is to be via the pedestrian walkway that has existed since 1997. The planning should be carried out by the end of 2018.
