N'harea (also Nharea , N'haréa and N'hârea ) is a small town in Angola , in southwestern Africa .

history

Dutch traders settled here in the middle of the 19th century, and the place became a trading post , which was administered from Andulo as the responsible administrative base ( Posto administrativo ). The first Portuguese settled here in 1893 and founded another administrative base in what is now the municipality of Gamba. In 1965 the administration of the Portuguese colony Angola elevated the place N'harea to a small town ( Vila ) and made it the seat of its own district.

After Angola's independence in 1975, the place suffered devastating destruction in the course of the Angolan civil war . Since the end of the civil war in 2002, a large number of reconstruction measures have been taken. For the first time the place received a paved road to Andulo and Kuito . a. Concrete bridges built over the Cunene , Cunhinga and Nduluma rivers , new education and health facilities built, and housing projects started.

administration

N'harea is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Bié . The district has over 100,000 inhabitants (2013 estimate) on an area of 7560 km².

Five communities (Comunas) make up the N'harea district:

education

Despite a number of new buildings and renovations, a large number of schools are still in poor condition. At the beginning of the 2013/2014 apprenticeship year, numerous teachers did not take up their duties, citing unreasonable conditions as the reason.

For the 2013/2014 academic year, around 50,000 first to 12th grade students were enrolled in N'harea County. The district administration has designated 377 teachers at 271 schools.

economy

The district is dominated by agriculture. Agriculture and river fishing are mainly subsistence farming.

Since 2008, the resumption of coffee production has also been promoted, in particular small farmers have been given material and loans. In 2013 the harvest of the 55 officially registered coffee planters in the Andulo and N'harea districts was already 34 tons, of which only 20 tons could be sold. The reasons were, on the one hand, the failure of the only plant in the region for peeling coffee beans, which can peel two tons a day. On the other hand, the demand for local production has so far lagged behind expectations. The government of the province of Bié expressed concern after this coffee balance in 2013, as the producers do not intend to expand the cultivation for the time being.
