Chitembo is a city and a district in Angola , in southwestern Africa .

history

The area was ruled in 1591 by King Muini Ndombo, who succumbed to illness. Then the area fell to the advancing Portuguese colonial power . In 1965 the Portuguese government made Chitembo a cidade (city).

economy

The district is dominated by agriculture. The main crops are cassava , corn , sweet potatoes , as well as fruit and vegetables. Animal husbandry, river fishing, hunting and honey production also play a role. The timber industry and the small-scale mining of diamonds in small mines in the district should also be mentioned.

administration

Chitembo is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Bié . The district has about 198,000 inhabitants (2013 estimate) on an area of ​​19,098 km².
