Mayoral election on January 21, 2007

The mayor of Schnabelwaid had been the second mayor Hans-Walter Hofmann (CSU) since September 26, 2006, as mayor Wilhelm Friedrich (SPD) had died at the age of 74. New elections took place on January 21, 2007. On the evening of the election, the SPD candidate, Rüdiger Goller, was proclaimed a narrow winner. But the next day it turned out that the votes had been counted incorrectly and the CSU candidate Hans-Walter Hofmann had won the election by just seven votes. For almost seven weeks, Schnabelwaid was the focus of interest from the press, radio and television: The election was contested by the SPD applicant and criminal charges were filed. It was disputed for a good five weeks whether the election was legal, as the counting on election evening resulted in a large number of violations of the election rules and the recount on Monday was not authorized by the election officer. The Bayreuth public prosecutor's office was able to rule out manipulation and closed its investigation on February 12, 2007. The Bayreuth District Office determined on March 2, 2007 that the election was valid. On March 15, 2007, the defeated SPD candidate declared that he would waive a judicial review due to the expected length of the proceedings.
