Ahorntal is a municipality in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth . The seat of the municipal administration is in Kirchahorn . There is no place called Ahorntal. The community is located about 14 kilometers southwest of the district town of Bayreuth.

history

The area of the municipality of Ahorntal, which emerged on January 1, 1972 as part of the regional reform from the former municipalities of Adlitz, Freiahorn, Kirchahorn (with the municipality of Christanz incorporated on April 1, 1971), Körzendorf, Oberailsfeld, Reizendorf and Volsbach, belonged to various imperial knights (Kirchahorn: Counts of Schönborn, Oberailsfeld: Barons of Rabenstein). With the Rhine Confederation Act , the area came to Bavaria in 1806 .

Incorporations

On May 1, 1978, the Poppendorf community was incorporated. On March 1, 2020, parcels from the former community-free area Langweiler Wald were incorporated. From the municipality of Ahorntal, the municipality part of Schöchleinsmühle was incorporated into the municipality of Mistelgau.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the city grew from 2073 to 2162 by 89 inhabitants or 4.3%. A peak was reached on December 31, 1996 with 2304 inhabitants.

Florian Questel ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) has been mayor since February 2019 . His predecessor from 2014 until his resignation for health reasons in September 2018 was Gerd Hofmann (Free Citizens Ahorntal, Free Ahorntal Voting Association). In the meantime Johannes Knauer (Christian Voters Union) took over the official business as 2nd mayor. Herbert Dannhäußer (Christian Voting Union) was mayor until 2014.

Oberailsfeld Church

Ahorntal is predominantly Roman Catholic . The annual light procession in Oberailsfeld on December 20th and in Volsbach on December 23rd are events worth seeing. There are several churches in the districts.

Rabenstein Castle

Klausstein chapel in the Ailsbach valley

In Ahorntal there is the Sophienhöhle under the castle site of the former Ahorn Castle and the Ludwigshöhle , also called Kühloch. The former can be visited with guided tours. It is considered one of the most beautiful stalactite caves in Germany. The latter is freely accessible and is located on the opposite side of the valley.
The Rabenstein Castle is the Sophienhöhle privately owned.
On the castle grounds there is the Rabenstein Castle falconry with a bird of prey and owl park. Flight demonstrations are also carried out there.
You can hike and climb in the Ahorntal. in the Franconian Jura .
The Adlitz castle and the castle in the village ponds are privately owned and can not be visited.
The Roman Catholic Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in the Volsbach district.

Economy and Infrastructure

Economy including agriculture and forestry

In 1998 there were no employees in the field of agriculture and forestry, 112 in the manufacturing sector and 55 in trade and transport at the place of work. In other economic sectors, no persons were employed at the place of work subject to social security contributions. There were 753 employees at the place of residence. In the manufacturing industry (as well as mining and quarrying of stones and earth) there was one, in the construction industry five companies. In 1999 there were 145 farms with an agricultural area of 1983 hectares. Of this, 832 hectares were arable land and 1146 hectares were permanent green space.

Breweries

In the municipality of Ahorntal, the Held-Bräu brewery in Oberailsfeld has existed since 1680, the Stöckel brewery in Hintergereuth since 1866 and the Nanni-Bräu in Freiahorn since 2008.
