history
The district of Birk was first mentioned in 1357 as "Pirk". The lords of Künsberg owned the Emtmannsberg manor from the beginning of the 13th century until 1487. In 1660 the margravial court chancellor Carl von Stein acquired the manor. In 1663 he was also enfeoffed with high jurisdiction . When the von Stein family died out in 1739, the manor fell to the Margraviate Bayreuth. As part of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth since 1792 , Emtmannsberg fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
On May 1, 1978, the previously independent communities of Birk and Hauendorf and parts of the dissolved community of Wolfsbach were incorporated.
