Carl von Stein , also Carl vom Stein (* December 8, 1626 in Nordheim , † September 13, 1675 in Bayreuth ) was a German lawyer and chancellor of the Margrave of Bayreuth .

Life and family environment

The aristocratic Frankish knighthood family of the Stein zu Nordheim and Ostheim, Carl von Stein, was the son of the captain of the knights and envoy of the Frankish knighthood Casper von Stein (1590-1632) and Rosina Maria von Guttenberg (1592-1639). He studied law in Altdorf and Strasbourg .

He was married twice; first marriage from 1653 to Maria Katharina von Oeppe (1632–1664), second marriage from 1668 to Margarete Geyer Free and Noble Mistress of Osterburg (1648–1722). From the first marriage came the later chief steward and prime minister of the Margraves of Bayreuth, Erdmann Freiherr von Stein (1662–1739), from the second marriage the Kurmainzian prime minister and governor of the Teutonic Order of the Ballei Hessen , Carl Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim (1673-1733).

Carl von Stein, who died in Bayreuth, was buried there. The important baroque poet Catharina Regina von Greiffenberg , who owed him important assistance, wrote an epicedium on him.

Political offices

After completing his studies, he entered the service of the Margravial Brandenburg Administration in Bayreuth. He was first a privy councilor and then rose to become chancellor and court judge . In addition to these offices, he was also envoy of the margravate to the Eternal Diet of Regensburg (1663–1675). He also held the office of a legacy of the burgrave of Nuremberg and was Commander of the Order of St. John in Litzen. In 1646 he became Defendent of the University of Altdorf .

On July 3, 1669, Carl von Stein was raised to the status of hereditary imperial baron.
