Deutschordensballei Hessen

The Deutschordensballei Hessen was one of the most important ballei (Middle Latin ballivus: overseer ), d. H. an order province in the Reich, the Teutonic Order . It was split off from the Ballei Thuringia in 1255 , and the Kommende Marburg was raised to the rank of Landkommende.

Denomination of the members and regional commander

After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the Reformed denomination next to the Lutheran and Catholic had been admitted in the kingdom that the sought Reformed confession belonging to the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel after that also reformed nobles should be included in the Bailiwick of Hesse. A contract negotiated in 1680/81 between Landgrave Karl and the high and German master Johann Caspar von Ampringen on the basis of the Carlstadt Treaty of 1583/84 determined u. a. that now, in addition to a Catholic, as many Lutheran as Reformed knights should be accepted and that a Lutheran land commander should be followed by a Reformed and then a Catholic.
