Wolfgang Schutzbar called Milchling (* 1483 in Treis an der Lumda ; † February 11, 1566 in Mergentheim ) was Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .

family

The Schutzbar family called Milchling , a noble family from Upper Hesse, has belonged to the Althessian knighthood that still exists today since the founding year 1532 .

Wolfgang's parents were Crafft Schutzbar called Milchling jun. and his wife Margaretha, the only child of Philipp von Trohe . One of Wolfgang's brothers, Adolf, was a Teutonic Knight and Commander in Griefstedt in Thuringia . Another brother, Caspar, was abbot in the Springiersbach monastery , and one sister, Anna, was the abbess of the Marienschloss monastery near Rockenberg .

Life

Wolfgang Schutzbar entered the Teutonic Order in 1507. In 1529 Daniel von Lehrbach was proposed as coadjutor by the then Landkomtur in Marburg . Schutzbar then followed in 1529 Lehrbach in office and was Landkomtur for the Ballei Hessen in Marburg until 1543 .

In 1543 he became Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, based in Mergentheim (1543–1566). He built the town hall and the first aqueduct there in 1564. 1544 Schutzbar of Emperor Charles V was Prussia invested.

Monument and coat of arms

On the market square fountain in Bad Mergentheim there is a statue of a knight with the coat of arms of Wolfgang Schutzbar called Milchling on the shield that he holds in his left hand. The earlier assumption that the person represented the Grand Master himself has been refuted.

Blasonierung "square by a continuous black bars cross, covered with a gold lilies rod cross, in field 1 in Silver a black bar cross, in field 2 and 3 in Silver three (2: 1) with the stems to trefoil related black Linde leaves (including balls or Hearts) and in field 4 a black miter , the whole thing covered with a label, in it a black gold-armored eagle in gold . "

The Lindendreipass is the coat of arms of the Schutzbar, and the miter indicates the abbey of Fulda , whose abbot was his nephew of the same name Wolfgang Schutzbar called Milchling from 1558–1567.

The Grand Master's coat of arms of Wolfgang Schutzbar is described as follows: “Quartered by a continuous black bar cross with a golden lily cross, in fields 1 and 4 a black cross in silver, in fields 2 and 3 in silver three (2: 1) with the stems for a three-pass connected black linden leaves (also balls or hearts), the whole thing covered with a label, inside a black gold-armored eagle in gold . “Without the three pass in 2 and 3 it is the general grandmaster's coat of arms.
