Paul Heider (born June 21, 1868 in Adamsthal in Moravia ; † January 25, 1936 in Opava , Moravian-Silesian , Czechoslovakia ) was a theologian and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order between 1933 and 1936 .

Life

Training and first job

Born as Alois Heider, he came from the simplest of backgrounds and attended elementary school in Engelsberg , where he was promoted by a priest from the Teutonic Order. This enabled him to attend the lower secondary school in Freudenthal . In 1884 he entered the archbishop's seminary in Kremsier . In 1886 he entered the novitiate of the German Order and chose the name Paul. In 1889 he passed the best school leaving examination in Moravia. After theological studies at the University of Innsbruck , he was ordained a priest on July 26, 1892 . After years of chaplaincy in the Jeseníky Mountains , he came to Freudenthal in 1896, where he was also president of the journeyman's association . Under his leadership the clubhouse of the Catholic journeyman's association was completed and inaugurated in 1899. After three years as pastor of Würbenthal , he returned to Freudenthal in 1909, where he became pastor and dean of the Freudenthal dean's office.

Provost of Troppau

In November 1916 he succeeded Norbert Johann Klein, who was appointed Bishop of Brno , as provost of the Assumption Church in Opava.

After the First World War , Heider became politically active in various institutions, for the German Christian Social People's Party and for the Catholic newspapers Das Volk and Deutsches Wochenblatt, which appeared in Troppau and later in Jägerndorf . As a result of the First World War, the previously bilingual educational institutions in the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic were separated and predominantly into purely Czech institutions. As a result, the seminar in Kremsier was no longer open to the German seminarians. Heider, who had previously tried in vain to establish a boarding school for the grammar school in Freudenthal, now advocated the establishment of a German boys' college at the same location. A lottery, a charity play by the local writer Viktor Heeger and a building donation from the Teutonic Order contributed to the financing. Before the inauguration in August 1926, there was a conflict between the building association under Heider's leadership and the Archbishop of Olomouc , Leopold Prečan , in which Bishop Norbert Klein mediated. During his time as provost, he was awarded the titles of monsignor and papal honorary prelate , which are unusual for religious .

Grand Master

On May 31, 1933, Paul Heider was unanimously elected Grand Master as successor to the late Norbert Klein. On 17 October 1933, the Olomouc he donated Auxiliary Bishop Josef Schinzel the benediction . As Grand Master, Paul Heider resided in Freudenthal and campaigned, among other things, for the beatification of Peter Rigler , as well as for the formation of lay people within the order. After his death on the Pauli Conversion Festival in 1936, he was buried next to his predecessor in the Freudenthal grand master's grave.
