Marian Tumler
Marian Joseph Tumler (born October 21, 1887 at Schlanders ; † November 18, 1987 in Vienna ) was an Austrian theologian and between 1948 and 1970 the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .
Life
Joseph Tumler was born on the “Kopf am Egg” farm in Nördersberg near Schlanders in South Tyrol , which the family has owned for over a century . Visiting the Johanneum in Tirolo since 1889 , he entered the Teutonic Order in 1903, where he took simple vows as Frater Marian on December 8, 1904 and permanent vows on September 14, 1909 .
After studying theology in Bolzano , Prince-Bishop Dr. Josef Altenweisel on June 29, 1910 in the provost church of Bozen as a priest. Working as a cooperator in Sarnthein from 1915 to 1916 , he studied geography and history in Innsbruck in 1916/17 . But he had to interrupt his studies and from 1918 to 1920 taught history, religion and geography at the grammar school of the English Misses in Merano . After resuming his studies in Innsbruck in 1920/21, he received his doctorate on March 11, 1922.
In 1923 he was appointed vicar to St. Elisabeth (Altar der Kommende Wien) in Vienna, he became the second archivist of the order and on February 1, 1925 prosynodal judge of the Metropolitan Court of the Archdiocese of Vienna . From 1927 to 1931 he also worked at the ecclesiastical marriage court of the Apostolic Administration Burgenland .
After he had been elected Grand Chapter of the Order on May 29, 1925, he was elected to the second General Council in 1930 and to the first General Council in 1933 through the election of the General Chapter. He was hereby the Grand Master's deputy.
On January 11, 1933, he took over the management of the Order Archives and on April 30, 1938, the Grand Master also appointed him Deputy Land Commander of Austria. Tumler did a tremendous job in the archive. He arranged and registered no less than 12,000 documents and in 1938 completed a work on the Teutonic Order by 1400, which, however, due to the war, could not be published until 1955.
From the end of 1938 Tumler held various pastoral positions until 1943 when he took over the representation of the Friesach hospital chaplain . When the Grand Master was largely incapacitated after the Second World War, the responsibility rested on him. In 1947 he achieved the return of the Austrian order's property, which also included the archive and treasury.
After the Grand Master's death , he was appointed Vicar General and was elected Grand Master himself on May 10, 1948 in Lana . Just two days later he received the abbot's benediction.
Tumler's grandmaster years were years of development. If the development in Eastern Europe turned out to be a particular problem, a Brothers' Convention was established in Darmstadt in 1949 , thus laying the foundation for the German Brethren Province. Tumler was also one of the religious superiors who took part in the 2nd Vatican Council .
In an attempt to make the order contemporary, he followed the Pope's call and founded a mission station in Sweden in 1963 . As early as 1965 he was recognized by the family institute, which important personalities such as Konrad Adenauer have now joined.
After leading his religious community through the tumultuous times of the council and the post-council period, he resigned on October 6, 1970. He spent the following 17 years of his life as Father Marian in Vienna, where he died on November 18, 1987.
