Bruno Platter
Bruno Johann Platter (born March 21, 1944 in Unterinn , Ritten , South Tyrol , Italy ) was Abbot General and the 65th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 2000 to 2018 .
Life
Bruno Platter joined the Teutonic Order in 1963. On September 12, 1964, he made his first profession and studied theology . After solemn profession on September 15, 1969, he was ordained a priest on June 29, 1970 . He was assigned to the priory of South Tyrol and took over the management of the Deutschordenskonviktes in Bolzano as well as the management of the professional community of educators. In 1973 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Innsbruck with a thesis on the prohibition of mixed marriages . Among other things, he worked as a provincial economist. From 1974 to 2000 Bruno Platter was also the church rector of St. Georg in Weggenstein , the Teutonic Order Church in the center of Bolzano.
Grand Master
The General Chapter of the Teutonic Order elected Bruno Platter as the successor to Arnold Wieland on August 25, 2000 in Lana as their Grand Master , the 65th Grand Master since 1198. He received the Bishop of Bozen-Brixen , Wilhelm Egger , on October 29, 2000 Abbot's Benediction . On August 24, 2006 and August 2012, Platter was re-elected by the General Chapter of the Order, which met in Vienna .
On the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Tannenberg on July 15, 2010, which heralded the decline of the order's rule in the east, the Polish President Bronisław Komorowski , Platter, was the first Grand Master to attend the annual commemoration in Grunwald .
As Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, he was directly subordinate to the Pope and had his official seat in the Teutonic Order House in Vienna . A week before the Order's electoral chapter in August 2018, Platter announced that - due to his age - he would not be eligible for any further term as Grand Master. On August 22, 2018, he resigned from office, which was immediately followed by the election of his successor, Frank Bayard .
