The father was Count Widekind I. von Battenberg and Wittgenstein and the mother was Ida von Runkel . He was probably the third son from this marriage. The brothers were Siegfried I von Wittgenstein and Widekind II von Battenberg.

Life

After the death of his father in 1234, Werner initially took part in the rule. In 1238 he was co-exhibitor of the deed for the sale of half of the County of Battenberg and the County of Wittgenstein to Archbishop Siegfried III of Mainz . on. When the paternal inheritance was soon divided into the separate counties of Battenberg and Wittgenstein, Werner was left empty-handed.

He entered the clergy. Instead of joining the Johanniterkommende Wiesenfeld , which was co-founded by his ancestors , he joined the Teutonic Order in Marburg . He came to Prussia as a knight of the order in 1249 . A year later he came back to Marburg. There he is occupied from 1252 - 1256 as Komtur der Kommende Marburg and thus Landkomtur of the Deutschordensballei Hessen . In 1257 he was Komtur in Balga , and in 1262 he was Land Marshal in Prussia; it appears as such in a German-language document from Thorn .

Werner von Battenberg was appointed German master in 1264. He gave up this office voluntarily in 1272. Instead he became Commander of the Alsace-Burgundy Ballei . He soon gave up this office, too, and from 1273 he was a simple friar in Sachsenhausen . For the last time it is occupied for 1277. He died on September 11th, possibly in Mergentheim .
