Life and family environment

Casper von Stein came from a family of the Frankish imperial knighthood . He was born as the son of the knight captain Casper von Stein (1571-1602), the gentleman on Nordheim , and Maria Magdalena von Wallenfels († 1598). He is also buried in Nordheim. He was married to Rosina Maria von Guttenberg (1592–1639) since February 16, 1618 . Both son Carl (1626–1675) was Chancellor of the Margrave of Bayreuth . His younger brother Lorenz (1628–1684) married Margaretha Barbara von Laineck (1640–1671 ) in 1659 , who brought the estates of Förbau , Schwarzenbach an der Saale and Joditz to the Stein family.

Professional and political activity

After studying law at the universities of Leipzig and Cologne , after the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War , he turned to professional politics. As a member of the mostly Protestant Frankish imperial knighthood , he was knight captain of this corporation. Although the imperial knighthood was in principle rather loyal to the emperor, a compromise with the Swedes who had advanced into Franconia had to be sought. He was therefore envoy of the Frankish imperial knighthood to the Swedes. The cooperation with the Swedish troops was obviously close and fruitful, because they made him king. Swedish Secret Council appointed. At the same time, however, he also carried out tasks to be assigned by the Reich. So he not only became district judge in Franconia, but also magistrate in Wildberg and Rotenstein . In addition to these public tasks, he also administered his inherited lands, in particular Nordheim, which his father inherited in 1602.
