As DB Class VT 98 were secondary line - railcars of the German Federal Railroad designated. From 1968 they were run as DB class 798 and 796 . Colloquially, these rail buses are referred to together with similar series as Uerdingen rail buses .
history
The VT 98.9 was developed in the mid-1950s from the VT 95.9 , which with only one drive motor was too weakly motorized for many routes. Therefore the VT 98.9 had two traction motors. The VT 98.9 possessed in contrast to the VT 95.9 over buffer beams with screw couplings , so that as a drag railcars additional rail cars could carry that corresponded to the central European standard. This was used both occasionally for individual freight wagons ( express freight train wagons) and occasionally for passenger wagons ( reinforcement wagons). However, the additional load that a rail bus could pull was significantly lower than that of locomotives. Thanks to its standard coupling devices, a VT 98.9 could also be set at the end of other trains in order to be transported with external power.
Underfloor motors of the type U 10 from Büssing AG were installed in all rail bus types , the same drive as in the Berlin double-decker buses of the type D2U . The six-speed transmission was supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen AG . Instead of an accelerator pedal , these railcars had a hand throttle lever on the left of the driver's seat. They had an engine dust brake for use on steep sections .
The interior was kept simple and resembled omnibuses or trolleybuses at the time . It was an open-plan car . The backrests of the bench seats could be folded down by the passengers as needed - for example, to sit facing the direction of travel or to accommodate a small group face to face.
For these 329 railcars, 220 trailer cars VB 98 with packing compartment , another 100 without packing compartment and 310 control cars VS 98 were produced. 3 VB 98 trailer cars were subsequently converted into VS 98 control cars. Most of the time at DB, these vehicles were used in the combination VT + VB + VS. But there were also shorter two-person units (VT + VS), and occasionally the motor vehicle (VT) was traveling alone. Longer sets, up to six-car units (VT + VB + VS + VT + VB + VS) were formed with particularly high passenger volumes.
In 1968 the type number of the railcars was changed to 798, the sidecars were given the numbers 998.0-3 and control cars 998.6-9. The serial number of the control car was increased by 600 (VS 98 001 became 998 601-9).
A few railcars were modernized and were given a special paint job in white and mint green, the product colors of the German Federal Railroad for local transport at the time. These rail buses ran on the Chiemgau Railway from Aschau to Prien , later until 2014 as " Ulmer Spatz ". Otherwise, the rail buses kept the typical purple red RAL 3004 for railcars of the Federal Railroad until the end .
In 1988, 47 railcars, 23 sidecars and 45 control cars were converted to one-man operation. They received pneumatic door locking devices and payment tables for the driver. These vehicles were given the series number 796 and 996.
In 1989 the Turkish State Railways Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları (TCDD) acquired 25 VT 98, which they called the RM 3000 series. 25 control cars (Rp) and 15 trailer cars (Rt) came to Turkey in addition to the Rm 3001 to Rm 3025 railcars .
A triple unit was acquired in 2015 by the “Initiative Fuchstal-Bahn ” and has been used for special tourism trips in the Schongau area since July 2015 .
