Free Voters Germany ( short name : FWD ) is a small German party with regional associations in Brandenburg and Berlin . It emerged in 2009 from the Brandenburg State Association of Free Voters after it had been excluded from the Federal Association of Free Voters because of “signs of right-wing infiltration” .

The Free Voters Germany use the same name as the Federal Association of Free Voters, which explicitly uses the name Free Voters Germany according to the statutes. Since it is an unprotected, freely usable term, which classically describes non-party voter groups and can be used by any group, this can hardly be prevented. However, the party explicitly pointed out the non-identity on its website and attached to the statutes.

history

The party was founded on June 7, 2009 in Eberswalde . The first chairman was Manfred Ehlert, former mayoral candidate of the Schill party in Eberswalde. The state association of Brandenburg already existed when the federal party was founded, the planned establishment of further state associations in Berlin, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein before the 2009 federal election did not take place. The Berlin regional association was founded in January 2011.

At the same time, the Free Voters of Bremen announced that they belonged to the Free Voters of Germany. Like the Brandenburg State Association, the Free Voters Bremen were excluded from the Federal Association of Free Voters in 2009. However, this resulted neither in a merger nor in a state association in Bremen, but merely in personnel overlaps.

On November 24, 2010, the first FWD party convention took place. On this the Colonel of the Reserve of the Federal Armed Forces and Berlin State Chairman of the Association of Reservists of the German Federal Armed Forces , Hans-Jürgen Malirs, was elected Federal Chairman.

elections

Bundestag election 2009

The party first appeared in the federal election on September 27, 2009 with a state list in Brandenburg . The federal electoral committee found in the federal electoral committee meeting on July 17, 2009 that the number of members was very low, that party events were only attended by a few participants and that there was a lack of support from the population. Although the Federal Returning Officer Roderich Egeler therefore expressed "considerable doubts about the seriousness of the objective of influencing political decision-making and participating in the Bundestag and the Landtag", the electoral committee approved Egeler's proposal to recognize the party under the federal electoral law . The FWD achieved 0.8 percent of the valid votes in Brandenburg.

State election in Brandenburg 2009

The Brandenburg State Parliament was elected on September 27, 2009 at the same time as the 2009 Bundestag election. The FWD entered with a joint list with the Brandenburg United Citizens Movements under the name Together for Brandenburg: Free Voters . The deputy chairman Dirk Weßlau, former election campaign coordinator of the Schill party for the new federal states for the federal election in 2002 was also deputy chairman of the Brandenburg United Citizens Movements. The electoral association received 1.7% of the vote.

The FWD used the advertising spots for the federal election for campaign advertising for the state election in Brandenburg, but not for campaign advertising for the Bundestag. This happened because the Brandenburg election was emphasized several times, Malir's top candidate was presented as the “top candidate for Brandenburg” and called for “ voting together for Brandenburg on September 27, 2009 : Free voters [to]” and the list name in the pun “ I'm going to vote for Brandenburg with my friends. Together for Brandenburg we support the free voters this time ”was mentioned. The website of the Brandenburg State Association was also specified, which in turn was only a forwarding to the list association Together for Brandenburg: Free Voters for the 2009 State Election. In addition, the party used the (legally correct) name similarity to the Federal Association of Free Voters of the Federal Republic of Germany. V. , from which the associated regional association had just been excluded in April 2009: The insertion at the end of the commercial "Free Voters - FWD" instead of correct Free Voters Germany , the actress' sweater in the commercial with the label "Free Voters", the website the list association with the modified logo of the Federal Association of Free Voters of the Federal Republic of Germany e. V. as well as the abbreviation "FREIE VÄHLER" also used by them suggested an affiliation or identity with the federal association.

After the election , the electoral association applied for party funding , which was refused by the Bundestag administration , since party funding is only available to parties, not to electoral associations. The decision of the Federal Electoral Committee of July 17, 2009 on the recognition of the electoral association as a party was thus withdrawn, because only parties can run for the Bundestag election.

Election in Berlin 2011

For the election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 2011 , the FWD had announced a candidacy. However, she was unable to collect the necessary support signatures. She therefore ran for only one direct candidate for the House of Representatives and in six elections for district assemblies . The direct candidate Hans-Jürgen Malirs achieved the worst first vote result in the constituency of Marzahn-Hellersdorf 5 with 39 votes, which corresponds to a share of 0.2%.

Bundestag election 2017

The FWD wanted to run for the 2017 federal election , but was denied party status.
