The Winterstein castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle at 522  m in the Winterstein district of the municipality of Simmelsdorf in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria .

history

The castle was mentioned for the first time in 1326 and was inhabited by a local noble family, which presumably also included the founders of the castle. During this time, the owners constantly changed, which meant that the castle was already divided into many ownership shares in the middle of the 14th century. In 1372 the castle was owned by the von Egloffstein family. The castle was spared from the First Margrave War in 1450, but everything around the castle was burned down.

Until the second half of the 17th century, the castle changed hands again and again, then came to the Lochner von Hüttenbach , who then called themselves Lochner von und zu Winterstein. In 1662 the castle was sold to the Tucher von Simmelsdorf and Winterstein family , who used the castle as a hunting lodge and had it administered by a Vogt, and at the end of the 17th century had it modernized and expanded.

After the castle had meanwhile been sold to farmers and some buildings and the main building had been destroyed, the Tucher bought Winterstein Castle back and are its owners to this day.

description

The gatehouse with battlements , parts of a corner tower and the outer walls of the palace are still preserved from the former castle complex .
