Thann Castle

Thann Castle , also called Burgthann, is the ruin of a spur castle at 420  m above sea level. NN high mountain spur above the Schwarzach valley in the municipality of Burgthann in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria .

history

The castle was built in the 12th century by the Reichsministeriale von Thann with headquarters in Altenthann . In 1160 a knight of Thann was first mentioned on the Göckelsberg.

In 1287, after the Thanners were believed to have died out, the castle was first mentioned. The owners of the following years were Duke Ludwig of Bavaria , King Rudolf I , Burgrave Friedrich III. called by Nuremberg and others. From 1346 the castle was the seat of a Hohenzollern nursing office .

In 1381 the robber knight Eppelein von Gailingen, known in Franconia, was imprisoned in the castle for one night before he was handed over to the Neumarkt executioner.

In 1460 the castle was destroyed in the Bavarian War and rebuilt in 1463. During the Thirty Years' War , imperial troops destroyed the south-east wing of the castle in 1635. In 1648 it was sacked by Swedish troops and rebuilt after 1652. After the maintenance office was relocated in 1792, the castle came to different owners, fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry.

The first security measures began in 1968 and were continued on a large scale in 1988 by the municipality of Burgthann.

Building history and facility

The outer bailey , of which the remains of the wall still bear witness, was separated from the hill by a ditch carved into the rock . The core castle (main castle) has a narrow Zwinger in front of it with a gate building that was destroyed by lightning in 1897 , probably earlier with a drawbridge . The archway is more recent.

The circular wall , built mostly from sandstone blocks , with battlements has been almost completely preserved. The no longer extant Palas , from which even light slits and a garderobe witness, was on the west side. The outer wall made of medium-sized blocks from the 12th century is the oldest part of the castle complex.

The well-preserved, 27-meter-high round donjon made of humpback ashlar masonry with a square interior dates from the 13th century . The well-preserved maintenance office building from more recent times, above whose entrance a dragon relief can be seen, stands on the south side.

The chapel of truss was later externally attached to the curtain wall. On the east side are the remains of a large building that was destroyed in the Thirty Years War, in the basement of which there were stables and on the upper floor the women's quarters. The inhabited house in the north-west of the complex was more recent. This was demolished in 2017.

Castle Hill

The slope of the Burgberg, which slopes down north to the Schwarzach Valley, has been a protected part of the landscape since August 1, 2001 . The approximately 4 hectare area is under protection in order to preserve the characteristic landscape of the entire Burgberg ensemble . The traditional use of the Burganger in the form of grazing supports in particular the semi- arid lawns and hedges in an ecologically optimal condition. The 3 castle oaks , which are designated as natural monuments , are also located on the protected area .

Todays use

The castle houses a small museum of local history, in which, among other things, finds from archaeological excavations from 1987 to 1989 are exhibited. During the opening times can keep be climbed. In the summer, the castle festival of the Burg Burgthann Association, a jazz festival and a few other events take place on the castle grounds. In 1995, the Bavarian Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal Museum was opened at the castle, which is maintained by the Burg Burgthann Association. Precious unique items and originals from the water management authorities in Nuremberg, Ansbach and Regensburg are exhibited there. In 2007, the research group Höhlen und Karst Franken e. V. freed the 14-meter-deep castle fountain from rubbish. The castle was designated as an architectural monument (D-5-74-117-2) by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

Since June 2010 it has been possible to get married in the inner courtyard. The first mayor, Heinz Meyer, performed the first wedding. In spring 2015, several security and fire protection measures were taken at the castle. The attached metal constructions have a lasting effect on the overall appearance of the castle and are still causing controversial discussions among the population today. A corrective measure of the measures is currently not planned.
