The Wenzelschloss (also: Burg Lauf ) is a former imperial residence on an island in the Pegnitz in the Franconian town of Lauf an der Pegnitz in the district of Nürnberger Land .

history

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Lauf was an imperial estate of the Staufer and was held by the Laufer Reichsministeriale .

The castle came to the Wittelsbach family before 1275 , before it was destroyed in 1301.

In 1353, the later Emperor Charles IV (who was baptized in the name of the Bohemian national saint Wenzel ) acquired the Upper Palatinate and areas on the Pegnitz and thus also Lauf. The emperor combined the vast areas on the Pegnitz to form New Bohemia ( countries of the Bohemian Crown ).

From 1356 the emperor had a new building carried out on the site of the destroyed predecessor castle, which represented the last overnight accommodation on "New Bohemian" soil before moving into the imperial city of Nuremberg. Particularly impressive is the coat of arms hall in the east wing, which was built around 1360 and presumably served the emperor as a bedroom and is decorated with 112 carved coats of arms and two keystones of the ribbed vault.

In 1373 the castle, which had not yet been completely finished, came back to the Wittelsbach family .

In 1504 the castle came to the people of Nuremberg, who carried out renovations in 1525–1527, 1579, 1649, 1679 and 1736. In the 17th century the gate tower at the main entrance to the castle was decorated with the Bohemian coat of arms and a statue of St. Wenceslas.

today

From 1985 to 2013 the castle was used by the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts as a Lauf branch. A comprehensive restoration took place during this time. The castle is currently empty, but it can be booked for weddings and some of it can be viewed as part of the city tours.
