The Superibérica de Rugby (SIR) was a competition in rugby union . It was the first professional league in Spain and starts after the División de Honor de Rugby organized by the Spanish Rugby Federation ( Federación Española de Rugby ) . Six teams took part in the only championship. There are no promoters or relegators. Although the teams are franchises , they are managed by existing rugby clubs, some of which are steeped in tradition.

history

In the 2007/2008 season, the Spanish rugby club association Asociación de Clubes de Rugby de España (ACR) began to consider establishing a joint professional competition with teams from Spain and Portugal . However, the project failed due to resistance from some clubs and the Spanish association. As a result, the four clubs UE Santboiana , CR El Salvador , Bera Bera RT and CRC Madrid began to design a separate professional league in collaboration with the well-known TV presenter Michael Robinson and the event company Steelman Sports . A championship consisting of five Spanish and four Portuguese teams and a club from Gibraltar was planned at the beginning .

The Portuguese clubs Os Belenenses , Benfica , Direito and Agronomia as well as the entrepreneur Charly Cruz from Gibraltar agreed to take over franchises at the beginning, but in the end the project failed due to the financial conditions.

The squad consisted of 35 players, of whom a minimum of 10 would have to have a professional contract with a gross salary of at least € 4,500. 5 players had to be under 23 years old and 15 had to be eligible to play for the Spanish national team. Each club also had to pay € 60,000 participation fees to the organizer Superibérica Sports Events SL and had to have a stadium with a capacity for 2,000 spectators and floodlights .

The 2009 season went on as planned, the winner of the competition was Madrid Gatos , but the Superibérica de Rugby was discontinued and no longer played due to the quarrels with the Spanish Rugby Federation and due to financial difficulties after the first season.

financing

The main sponsors of the league were Powerade and Adecco . Technical sponsors were also NH Hoteles , Renfe , ASISA , As and JCDecaux .

The equipment was taken over by the sporting goods manufacturer Canterbury of New Zealand .

Reporting and television

The TV rights were held by the Spanish television company Sogecable , which broadcast a match every match day live on Canal + . The remaining games were broadcast with a time delay.

mode

The teams initially played a round-robin tournament with a return leg. There were four points for a win and two points for a draw. If a game was lost with a difference of seven points or less, or a team scored at least four attempts , a bonus point was awarded. The best four qualified for a Final Four tournament. In the event of a tie, the higher number of attempts achieved was used first, then the number of drop goals and finally the lower number of cards.

Teams

The participating teams were organized as franchises within a closed league, so there were no promoted or relegated teams. However, the teams were run by existing Spanish rugby clubs. Behind Madrid Gatos was the club CRC Madrid, behind Vacceos Cavaliers CR El Salvador, Basque Korsarioak was directed by Bera Bera RT, Catalunya Blaus Almogàvers by UE Santboiana, Els Mariners from RC La Vila and Sevilla FC Andalucía Rugby from Helvetia Rugby and sponsored by Sevilla FC football club . The cadres of the franchises did not correspond to those of the clubs; It was planned that the teams would recruit players from various teams in their region , similar to other professional leagues that serve as role models, in particular the Pro12 or the Super 14 . For example, CRC Madrid cooperated for the franchise with the neighboring clubs Alcobendas Rugby , CR Cisneros , CR Liceo Francés and the Madrid Rugby Association, Basque Korsarioak and Almogàvers also recruited players from France due to their cultural ties and the great rugby tradition in these regions located part of the Basque Country or from Northern Catalonia . Although rugby is only a marginal sport in many parts of Spain, the sport is quite popular in university circles. It was also important that the Basque Country , Catalonia , Valladolid , Madrid , Andalusia and Valencia , the strongholds of Spanish rugby, are represented, as the density of clubs is particularly high there.
