Deichschau in Cuxhaven

A dike show is the regular (usually annual or semi-annual) assessment of dikes. The stability and the proper condition of the dike and its associated structures and facilities are checked.

A dike association , a dike authority or dike inspection commission is responsible for this . The supervisory authority (the responsible water authority ) usually also takes part. A dike association is a water association that is specifically responsible for flood protection .

A dyke inspection is comparable to a bridge inspection for bridges or the regular inspection of other structures.

“Deichschau” used to be the name of the dike associations themselves.

As an alternative to the classic dike exhibition, scientific research has recently been carried out to determine whether drones could take on this task.

Cultural history of the Deichschau

A dike show was definitely a highlight of the year in a region. Some of the local dignitaries started the dyke show with breakfast and ended with lunch. Alcohol was awarded more often. On the former Elbe island of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, those who take part in the Deichschau for the first time have to empty the "King's Cup" from 1852 with half a liter of wine in one go.
