Caspar Ludwig Momartz

Caspar Ludwig Momartz (born June 19, 1696 in Constantinople ; † November 10, 1761 ibid) was an Austrian - Levantine diplomat and writer .

Life

His father was from Flanders and his mother was Italian from Galata . Momartz had been an interpreter ( dragoman ) in the service of the Austrian embassy in Constantinople since 1719 at the latest . In 1739 he was instrumental in the conclusion of the Peace of Belgrade . As secretary of the legation (since 1745) he undertook two legation trips to Tunis in 1747 and 1748/1749 .

Momartz is the author of an allegorical poem in modern Greek , the Bosporomachia , in which the sisters Asia and Europe argue over which of the two belongs to the more beautiful bank of the Bosporus . The work from 1752 was published in 1766 by Eugenios Voulgaris in the Breitkopf publishing house in Leipzig . The work contains lyrical passages, descriptions of nature and information about the Christian minorities living in Constantinople in the 18th century.
