Association of German Sports Journalists

The Association of German Sports Journalists ( VDS ) is a professional association for full-time sports journalists based in Mannheim . The association includes sports journalists from the print, television, radio and online sectors as well as sports photographers.

The association, founded in 1927, consists of 21 regional associations which, according to their own information, have around 3,500 members.

The VDS is headed by a six-person honorary executive committee. The current president is Erich Laaser . The former president Karl-Heinz Cammann is today honorary president of the VDS, as is his predecessor Günter Weise .

The VDS is a member of the Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive (AIPS), the world association of sports journalists.

Self-image and activities

The association is the point of contact for the German Olympic Sports Confederation and the various national sports associations when it comes to questions relating to the awarding of journalist accreditations for sports events.

In addition, the association provides its members with further training measures and helps with legal advice . In accordance with the 1995 code of honor of the Association of Sports Journalists , the VDS developed guidelines for sports journalism in 2009 .

The VDS receives public attention at the annual awards for Sportsman of the Year and Footballer of the Year , which are elected by the members of the association.

The VDS annually announces professional sport journalistic competitions in the categories print, online, TV, radio and photo, in which VDS members can participate. The VDS television award for live sports journalistic reports and features and the Herbert Zimmermann award for radio sports journalists are well known.
