Merlevenez is a French municipality with 3207 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
geography
The municipality is located in the southwest of the department about 5 kilometers east of the agglomeration of Lorient between the Blavet and the Ria d'Étel .
Merlevenez borders the municipality of Kervignac in the north, Nostang and Sainte-Hélène in the east, Plouhinec in the south, Riantec in the south -west and Locmiquelic in the far west . The settlement can be found almost exclusively in the centrally located town of Melevenez.
history
The town was founded by the Knights Templar , who built a monastery and a chapel there in the 12th century. The place name changes several times and is first found in 1367 as Breullenevez . Merlevenez received the status of a municipality in 1790 and initially belonged to the canton of Kervignac, in 1801 the municipality was assigned to the canton of Port-Louis .

The community is connected to the French trunk road network ( N24 , N165 ) northwards via the D9 to Hennebont and eastwards via the D33 to Landévant . The greater Lorient area west of the Blavet is reached via the D194, which branches off from the D9 in the neighboring municipality of Kervignac . The D9 leads in the south over the Ria d'Étel to Belz , the D33 in the south-west to Riantec .
The nearest regional train stations are in Hennebont, Brandérion and Landévant, with long-distance connections in Lorient and Auray . The closest airport is Lorient Bretagne Sud . There are bus connections (Monday to Saturday) to Lorient and Belz. Until 1939 Merlevenez was connected to the railway network of the Chemins de fer du Morbihan .
