Port-Louis ( Breton Porzh-Loeiz ) is a French town with 2,618 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
The city is right next to the larger city of Lorient , only separated by a bay .
history
Port-Louis was originally called Blavet , after the river Blavet of the same name , which flows into the Atlantic here, and was founded in 1618 by Louis XIII. renamed Port-Louis by France .
A citadel covered the entrance to the bay and the harbor. It was used by the Germans as a prison camp during World War II . 69 members (or suspects) of the Resistance were shot there.
The city and its German occupation was extensively bombed by the Allies.
From 1921 to 1939 Port Louis was the end point of a stretch of the Chemins de fer du Morbihan .

Twin cities
Since 1992, Port-Louis with Bad Harzburg in Lower Saxony by a twinning connected. The initiators were the mayors at the time, Michel Vigouroux and Klaus Homann. Today the partnership is mainly brought to life by the city of Bad Harzburg, the Franco-German Society Bad Harzburg and the Les amis du jumelage association.
