Hœdic (Breton: Edig ) is a French commune with 99 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Morbihan department in the Brittany region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Lorient and the Canton of Quiberon .

geography

The municipality is located on the Île d'Hœdic , a small granite island in the Bay of Biscay , in southern Brittany . There are no other communities on the island. The municipality also includes the small island group of Les Grands Cardinaux in the southeast with the Phare des Grands Cardinaux lighthouse . The two most important ports on the island are Port Argol in the north and Port de la Croix in the south.

history

The community was founded in 1891, before it was incorporated into Le Palais on the neighboring island of Belle-Île . In 1931 it had 417 inhabitants who lived mainly from the shrimp fishing . The French archaeologist Saint-Just Péquart describes the inhabitants as lazy and lackluster, and there is not a single craftsman to be found on the island. The women are not even engaged in needlework and their kitchen is very rudimentary. The island shows old traces of the fields, but only potatoes and no grain are grown, the mill and the community oven have meanwhile disintegrated. In winter, the island is often cut off from the outside world for weeks.

Excavations

In 1931 and 1934, Saint-Just Péquart (1881-1944) excavated a burial ground from the late Mesolithic , which was located in a pile of shells. It rests on a small spur on the northwest tip of the island. The shell heap also contained hearths made of stone slabs. 14 graves with all kinds of grave goods were found.
