The village church of Saint-Thuriau

Plumergat ( bret. : Pluvergad ) is a commune with 4,112 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Morbihan department in the region of Brittany . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Lorient and the canton of Auray .

geography

Plumergat is in the interior of the Morbihan department. The village is located about fifteen kilometers northwest of the city of Vannes .

history

Finds prove human presence at the time of the Gauls and Romans. The name suggests that the village was founded before the 11th century. The parish with the patron Saint-Thuriau is first mentioned in the 13th century. However, Plumergat did not become an independent municipality until 1790. The First World War resulted in high blood tolls. 128 names are listed on the memorial stone in honor of the fallen.

Population development

Between 1841 and 1886 the population remained more or less stable. Thereafter it stabilized between 1886 and 1906 at a higher level of around 2,500 people. The numerous deaths of young men in World War I led to a decline in the population until 1962 (1911-1962: -21%). Since 1968, the number of residents has increased sharply due to the proximity to Vannes (1968-2012: + 113%). The development:
