The Saint-Yves chapel

Bubry ( bret. : Bubri ) is a French municipality with 2374 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Lorient and the canton of Guidel .

geography

Bubry is inland in the west of the Morbihan department. The village is located about 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Lorient and 22 kilometers southwest of the city of Pontivy . Neighboring communities are Persquen and Guern in the north, Melrand in the east, Quistinic and Lanvaudan in the south and Inguiniel in the west.

history

Finds show the presence of humans in pre-Christian times. Remains of a fortified homestead from Gallo-Roman times also prove the settlement in the period. From the 6th to the 13th centuries it was part of the extensive rule of Kemenet Héboé . During World War II there were numerous partisans against German supremacy. Several were executed after they were captured.

Population development

In 1793, Bubry was one of the most populous communities in the region with 3,472 residents. This was also the case throughout the 19th century. The population peaked in the period between the two world wars. From 1946 the community lost massive numbers of inhabitants (1946–2006: -49%). Since 2006 there has been a slight upward trend.
