Melrand ( Breton : Mêlrant ) is a French municipality with 1516 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .
geography
Melrand is located in the southern part of central Brittany and belongs to the Pays de Pontivy. Neighboring municipalities are Guern in the north, Pluméliau-Bieuzy with Bieuzy in the northeast and Pluméliau in the east, Saint-Barthélemy in the southeast, Quistinic in the south and Bubry in the west.
The place is away from major thoroughfares. The river Sarre runs just southwest of the village.
history
Historically, the municipality belongs to the Breton region of Bro-Gwened (French: Vannetais) and within this region to the Bro Baod (French: Pays de Baud) area and shares its history. From 1793 until its dissolution in 1801, Melrand was the capital of the canton of Melrand. Since then, the place has been assigned to the canton of Josselin.
