Saint-Jean-Brévelay ( Breton : Sant-Yann-Brevele ) is a French municipality with 2789 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .

geography

Saint-Jean-Brévelay is located in the southern part of Brittany in the center of the Morbihan department and belongs to the Pays de Pontivy.

Neighboring communities are Bignan in the northwest and north, Guéhenno in the north and northeast, Billio in the northeast, Plumelec in the east, Plaudren in the southeast and south, Locqueltas in the south and Colpo in the west.

The place is the intersection of numerous streets. The D1 runs through Saint-Jean-Brévelay as a connection from Guémené-sur-Scorff via Locminé to Péaule on the southern border of Brittany and the D11 and D778 as further important regional connections. The N 24 from Lorient to Rennes is important for national traffic . This runs nine kilometers north of the community. The closest connection is at Saint-Allouestre.

The most important bodies of water are the Claie river and the Lay and Sclunj streams . There are also numerous ponds and ponds in the municipality. In the southern part there are two large forest areas, the portion of the Bois de Gohlut and the Bois de Goh-Menhir .

history

The place is first mentioned in 1426 under the name of Sainct Jehan . During the French Revolution it was a center of the Chouannerie . Historically, the municipality belongs to the Breton region of Bro-Gwened (French: Vannetais) and within this region to the Bro Gwened (French: Pays de Vannes) area and shares its history. The municipality has been the capital of its own canton since 1793. In 1864, Saint-Jean-Brévelay gave part of its municipal area to the then newly founded municipality of Colpo.
