Mauron ( Breton Maoron ) is a French municipality with 3082 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . It belongs to the arrondissement of Pontivy and the canton of Ploërmel . The inhabitants are called Mauronnais (es) .
geography
The Yvel River forms the southeastern municipal boundary. Mauron is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Illifaut in the north and north-west, Gaël and Saint-Léry in the east, Concoret and Paimpont in the south-east, Néant-sur-Yvel in the south, Guilliers in the south-west and Saint-Brieuc-de-Mauron in the west.
Mauron is away from major rivers and main arteries. The Yvel River runs along the western border of the municipality. The Ploërmel – La Brohinière railway is out of service, but not officially closed; the regional economic development would like to resume freight traffic to Mauron.
history
The Roman road from Rennes to Quimper runs through the municipality .
In 1152 a small monastery was founded here.
In 1352 the battle of Mauron took place here , in which Guy II. De Nesle was defeated by the Anglo-Saxon army.
