Le Faouët ( Breton : Ar Faoued ) is a French municipality with 2803 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . Le Faouët belongs to the canton of Gourin .

location

Le Faouët is located in the extreme northwest of the Morbihan department, in the Cornouaille countryside , on a ridge above the 100 m lower lying valleys of the Ellé and Inam , which meet in the south of the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities are Meslan , Priziac , Langonnet , Le Saint , Guiscriff and Lanvénégen . The most important district next to the main town Le Faouët is the village of Saint-Fiacre , in which there is a beautiful Gothic church.

The D 769, an expressway that connects Lorient with Roscoff , runs through the municipality .

history

Historically, the municipality belongs to the Breton region of Kernev (French Cornouaille ) and within this region to the Aven region (French also) and shares its history. Le Faouët has been the capital of the canton of the same name since 1793.

Market hall

In the center of Le Faouët is the imposing, wooden market hall with a roof structure that is well worth seeing. Built at the end of the 15th / beginning of the 16th century, the market hall is still in use today.

Chapel of Sainte-Barbe

To the north of the village is the late Gothic Sainte-Barbe chapel on a ridge, which was built between 1489 and 1512. A remarkable Renaissance staircase leads down to the chapel, which is located just below the summit plateau.

Saint-Fiacre chapel

The Saint-Fiacre chapel of the same name, built in 1480, is located in the district of Saint-Fiacre . The colored wooden lettuce , richly decorated with carvings, is worth seeing .
