Nicolae Cartojan

Nicolae Cartojan (* 4. December 1883 in Călugăreni, Giurgiu County ; † 20th December 1944 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian linguist , Rumänist and medievalist .

life and work

Cartojan was a high school student in Bucharest (with a scholarship). From 1902 he studied at the University of Bucharest with Titu Maiorescu , Nicolae Iorga and above all with Ioan Bianu , whom he already knew from school. In 1910 he received his doctorate from Bianu with the work Alexăndria în literatura românească (Bucharest 1910). Then he was a high school teacher in Giurgiu and Bucharest. From 1912 to 1914 he was on leave for postgraduate studies in Berlin. In 1921 he received his habilitation with the work Noi contribuții la Alexăndria în literatura românească (Bucharest 1922). From 1923 to 1930 he was a professor at the College of Archival Studies and Paleography . In 1930 he became (as the successor to his teacher) professor at the University of Bucharest.

Cartojan was a member of the Romanian Academy (1941) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Padua (1942).
