Nesle was in 1348 by King Philip VI. appointed Marshal and served as Commander in Artois , Bourbonnais and Flanders during the Hundred Years War . During the siege of Saint-Jean-d'Angély in 1351 he was taken prisoner by the English, from which he was freed after paying a ransom.

In 1352 Nesle was a founding member of the Star Order newly founded by King John II . In August of the same year he led a contingent of around one hundred knights to Brittany , where they were surprised by a superior English army near Mauron. Although an escape route was open to them, Nesle gave the order to attack, true to the Order's motto, to be killed or captured rather than flee. Almost all knights including the marshal were killed in this battle, for the Star Order this hardly meant the ideal end after its foundation.

Guy de Nesle was married to Jeanne de Bruyères, their son was Jean II. De Nesle and their grandson Guy III. de Nesle , who fell at Azincourt in 1415 . Guy's own brother Guillaume, as well as her cousin, Marshal Jean de Clermont , died in the Battle of Maupertuis in 1356 .
